Showtime in Alaska
Trump wants to dismantle the alliance by isolating Russia; Russia wants to reassert its power
Good morning/good evening wherever you are - and thank you for subscribing to Global Threads !
It’s all eyes on Alaska today for the Trump-Putin summit.
The choreography and optics of such meetings are both interesting and important. So early first prize to Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s veteran Minster of Foreign Affairs, who turned up in a CCCP (USSR) sweatshirt - a deliberate statement of intent: Lavrov is there representing the former Soviet Union, and all of its former republics. 14 of these have become independent states. All should be anxious.
This is about more than Ukraine, in other words - as I wrote yesterday on this platform.
I’ve expanded on that at greater length in a long article about what Trump is thinking about: Ukraine is part of the picture; but for the US, this is part of a much (much) bigger geopolitical jigsaw.
